Local Councils poll 'only' election next March - PM
The elections for local elections in March will be the only elections that Malta will hold that month, the prime minister said yesterday.
He was referring indirectly to reports in a section of the media that he had been advised to call a general election in March.
Dr Gonzi was speaking at a reception for representatives of civil society at the Auberge de Castille.
This will be the first time that elections will be held for half of local councils. Elections previously used to be held every year for a third of the councils.

The longer Dr Gonzi delays and postpones the pending General Election, the tougher it will be for the PN to win a majority of the public vote. In the UK's last call to the ballots, the then incumbent PM Gordon Brown used that tactic to his government's detriment.

Why is Parliament being reconvened on January 18th and not on January 8th?
An unusual late date after the Christmas holidays, unless Dr Gonzi has something up his sleeve.

Of course Dr. Gonzi will not call an en early election even if the drama queen Franco Debono wants it his way. The power seat is too cosy.

Whatever it may be the date for a General Election depends on an 'INFANT 'politician called Franco Debono.
This MP thinks that he shines better that the Christmas star over our cribs.
He does think that he is in complete command over the Prime Minister. Come next election and we do hope that the people of your constituency would do away with you and your name would never apper on the PN Lists.

Elections why? Just for the sake of change!? As if The Malta Labour Party wiith the old Mintoff people still there at the pole position are any better! No thanks, i'm happy as I am... I was 22 in 1997... Had no work as I was still a university student, but had to find a quick job at Mc Donalds to start saving to pay my stipend back as it was changed into a loan! Apart the total mess at university what about the economy?! Alfred Sant brought it to it's knees... No thanks Labour... You had my vote in 1996 but never again.
Pat Hobson
Dec 22nd 2011, 14:41
You've brought tears to my old eyes, reading your message! In 1996 the country was already on its knees! And by the way ask the students today where they can find work, if not as part-timers in some fast food chain. Lil min trid tbellaghha???!!!! I don't think that you have brain in your cranium but mash to say what you have just said regarding the loans, or you have been some load of bull droppings!

The PM has the mandate from the citizens of Malta to govern till March 2013, even so September 2013. This has become an old broken record mainly from the PL media, that snap elections (general) are going to be called. This is a recepie for instability. A snap election only happened under Alfred Sant because his vision of a Switzerland in the Med was the beginning of his end, a total fantasy in his head. If a number of individuals are not happy with the present Government I tell them to book a ticket to Greece of Italy or Spain or Portugal and they will quickly book a return ticket and start idolising the present Government.

The Prime Minister Hon. Lawrence Gonzi's word put my mind at rest. I do not care whenever the general elections are held, as long as held as set in the Constitution. It is not my headache, I do not see the in next 18 months that we could have other taxes. on the contrary different sectors might have amnesty or waiving of penalties for your not conforming and paying taxes in time, as the majority of Maltese and Gozitans are forced to do, since they can help themselves to tax evasion.
After all I do not have Hon. Franco Debono behind my back. I think the Prime Minister is supposed to be wise enough to get hold of Hon. Debono and his antics, though this time, Hon. Debono is right. The people want delivery not empty talk by the Prime Minister and so they are expecting that the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs will be separated, some time before the Parliament reconvenes on January 18th.
What's the hoot what the Labour Party might say from the Opposition benches. The crucial day is the general elections day and it is then that Gonzi would show his worth. Delivery before empty words. Then the Maltese and Gozitan electorate is free to vote to whomever he/she wants to be in power for the next five years. Has the par idejn sodi, gone weak and soft? Gonzi with his usual sympathic (some describes it as nejjieka) smile, just say wait and see.
Mind you if we have the Labour Party in power, no hell will break loose..it might be for the better or for the worst. Personally I feel it would be for the better, though some figures is about time that the end their connections with the Party, but this seems very hard.
What is important is that we have a Government that regenerates Maltese politics to the modern European style, complete separation from State and Church, rejuvenated concepts of running the countries, more money in the pockets of the citizens and also revaluation of what is really needed for economic grow through accountability and meritocracy, controlled National Debt and an improvement in the Gross Domestic Product. Oh excuse me, i just woke up, and maybe I am still dreaming that heaven is on earth.
Mr J Xerri

There was no need for the Prime Minister to tell us this. Few people really believed that Dr Gonzi would opt for early elections, especially when there is still hope that the Government may recoup some of the lost ground.

No surprise - who ever heard of a turkey calling for an early Christmas?
George Calleja
Dec 22nd 2011, 12:40
Maybe it's the Labour turkey that is calling for an early Christmas. Ever since years gone by, the labour tactics remained the same when in opposition..their desire for another chance of finally winning a general election...a dream that have eluded them repeatedly

Dr F Debono's foray came after this statement.
So, by latest 31st December we would see the split within the Ministry of Justice and Home Affairs.
Otherwise, the House would come tumbling down!
And don't say it's wishful thinking because come what may from the latest barrage by Dr Debono the elections would still be held within a few months.

No news Dr Gonzi....YOU HAVE TO CHANGE THE ID CARDS BEFORE YOU CALL A GENERAL ELECTION, Happy Christmas dear PM.
Jimmy Magro
Dec 22nd 2011, 11:34
This is a very valid point. I fully agree with this statement.
Th ID Card system has been abondoned for many years and it needs to be updated before the next general election.
Furthermore, a serious program for house numbering should be initiated so that every person would be required by law to have a house number and NOT a house name.
House numbers must be integrated into the national GIS map as Malta is the only country in Europe not to have this. We always claim to be first in ICT but there are many sectors that fail to have the basic benchmark.
