The General Workers' Union has warned of possible industrial action at Bank of Valletta negotiations for the collective agreement broke down at the last minute.

In a statement the union said the matters under contention affect all employees, irrespective of grade.

It said it was planning to approve the agreement in the coming hours but last minute changes were made by the bank after it signed an agreement with the Malta Union of Bank Employees.

"The GWU regrets this dispute arises during the festive season, however, it is clear that the bank procrastinated on negotiations with unions over the past 18 months and finally rushed matters in the past weeks for its own interests."

The union said industrial action will commence as necessary after the festive season unless an agreement is reached.
