Assumption of Our Lady, Żebbuġ, Gozo

The foundation stone of the present parish church was laid in 1690 and Bishop Paolo Alpheran de Bussan consecrated it on October 28, 1726.

The church is located on a crest and has a façade divided into five bays. The middle three are equal and those at right and left a little narrower. Each bay is divided by a pilaster with Doric capitals.

The principal portal in the central bay consists of an elaborately moulded archivolt, set within a moulded frame and topped by a semi-circular pediment. A thick cornice and frieze separates the next level, that form part of the entablature attic.

The church has two bell-towers, one on each end. They consist of Doric pilasters on each corner with arched openings for the bells. Above runs a wide cornice with frieze, which has a balustraded balcony. The high front-piece is of a “temple”-style structure with a niche with balcony and a statue at centre, all topped by a triangular pediment.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority scheduled the parish church as a Grade 1 monument on August 26 as per Government Notice 782.
