Fenech & Fenech Advocates celebrated its 120th anniversary by hosting a special event at the Chamber of Commerce in Valletta on December 1, entitled 120 Years – A Reflection of Malta’s Economic Development. This event was attended by a number of distinguished guests including retired members of the judiciary, members of the diplomatic corps, regulators, clients and other service providers. It was chaired by Mark Fenech and a keynote address was delivered by Judge Giovanni Bonello who spoke about Malta’s rich legal and economic history.

In her welcoming speech Fenech & Fenech Advocates managing partner Ann Fenech explained that the thrust of the event was to highlight five sectors of Malta’s economy today showing how the country has developed from a colony entirely dependent on Great Britain when the law firm was established in 1891 to an independent nation and member of the European Union. Joseph Ghio discussed Malta’s emergence and development in the funds industry, Nicolai Vella Falzon discussed the aviation sector in Malta and the recent developments, Antonio Ghio discussed the balance between law and technology, Karl Diacono discussed Malta as a location for the provision of corporate services and Ann Fenech spoke about Malta as a maritime nation.

Fenech and Fenech Advocates was established in 1891 by Costantino Fenech who was a legal procurator and who was joined by Tomaso Fenech in 1917. From a two man practice in general civil and commercial litigation, Fenech & Fenech Advocates has flourished into the full service firm it is today, still offering top quality legal advice in civil and commercial litigation – a firm stronghold – but also offering value driven legal solutions in marine litigation, aviation, tax, ICT, intellectual property, financial services, trusts, ship finance, art and cultural heritage law, ship registration and corporate law.

In her closing remarks Ann Fenech paid a special tribute to Joseph Fenech whom she described as a visionary and a doer and a first class legal brain saying that what was a loss to Fenech and Fenech Advocates was a gain to the country when in 1987 he was called to public office and resigned from the practice to assist in the restructuring of the country.
