The Italian surgeon facing charges of involuntary homicide in connection with a case of alleged malpractice at St Luke’s Hospital six years ago says is ready to cooperate with the police.
On Monday the police asked the court to suspend the 10-year time bar on the case until the surgeon is found. He had left Malta shortly after the failed operation.
The police also asked for a European Arrest Warrant to be issued but in a note filed at the courts today, the doctor said he was ready to come to Malta and face the charges.
The doctor said the Maltese police had not contacted him about the matter so far.
The doctor, who is listed as working in the UK as a thoracic surgeon, said the Maltese police had not yet contacted him
He is linked to a case that started being heard behind closed doors last week. The court ordered a blanket ban on the details.
The Italian doctor is alleged to have removed an artery instead of a vein from a patient’s leg during a heart by-pass operation. The patient eventually died of complications despite various operations to save him.
A magisterial inquiry into the incident was concluded recently.
