KSU should be given more of Student's House - MP
KSU should be given more of Student's House so it was sad to see the Labour Party seemingly working against the students' interest, Nationalist MP Karl Gouder said.
Mr Gouder was reaction to a call by Labour MP Owen Bonnici for an investigation by the Public Accounts Committee or the Auditor-General into whether government rules were broken when parts of Students' House at the University were handed to the KSU, which then rented them out for commercial purposes.
In a letter to PAC chairman Charles Mangion, Dr Bonnici observed that Student's House is government property and there are strict government rules on the transfer of properties.
It had emerged from a parliamentary question answered by the Minister of Education that part of the building had been handed to the University Students' Council for purposes of administration, he said. The decision was taken by the University.
The Students' Council had then rented out the lower floor to businesses, which paid their rents to the council.
Mr Gouder said that for decades Student's House served as a hub for all student organisations.
Considering the ever increasing number of students on campus and the ever increasing number of organisations on campus, the student body has been for quite a while now feeling the need to increase its physical space on campus.
Apart from commercial outlets, which served to offer study-related services on campus, there was a dire need for more office spaces for all student organisations.
As a result, KSU, together with University administration should find a way to ensure that more space was dedicated to student organisations and to find the correct balance and formula to accommodate commercial interests on Campus, Mr Gouder said.

According to Mr Gouder "the student body has been for quite a while now feeling the need to increase its physical space on campus", Well if that is the case increase the space by all means. But on the other hand does it make sense that when you are in need of more physical space to go about renting part of what you already have for business purposes?

I believe the University has every right to allocate buildings on its own grounds for use by students. It seems Owen Bonnici would like to make some noises in typical labour fashion. The majority of students know who looks after their interests and who chased their ancestors on campus and tried to beat them with chains accompanied by a Labour minister who is still in the Labour fold.

I have six points to make:
1) I'm a University Student and for me KSU or no KSU, it doesn't make any difference whatsoever. To my understanding, most students are apathetic of the concept of KSU in the first place. All people are interested in is themselves and not the welfare of the student's body which encompasses them in the first place.
2) KSU members are there simply to further their political aspirations through a handful of votes which they interpret as a representative of the whole university student population. Pity, they don't interpret 1/10 of the electorate as being a vote of no confidence in the whole system altogether.
3) Hon. K. Gouder's move to defend the students in my opinion is simply a populist move. Even though i don't agree with the politics of Hon. O. Bonnici, i find nothing wrong with regards to his inquiry in this subject. If KSU did everything according to the book, then it follows that they shouldn't be fearing such an inquiry in the first place.
4) KSU needs to be reformed thoroughly and shouldn't be composed of one student organization with the philosophy "the winner takes it all". It should embody all the factions of the student's population.
5) Unfortunately, the room next to canteen is simply used for recreation purposes for the so called executive of KSU.
6) Puppet organizations such as SDM (PN) and MOVE (PL) should be discouraged on campus. Let's leave partisan politics for once and be open to criticism. We should exemplify our open-mindedness by accepting criticism and not divulging from it.

Why only KSU and not the other unions?
The answer is obvious.

Il-lejber mhu se jnehhi xejn minn ta hadd... se jkompli jzid lill tieghu biss. The mre time passes, the more labour shows its true colours. there is nothing new in labour. same old faces, same old ideas and the new faces are as good as the tried and tested old which we have done away with a long time ago!

I hope that you are only trying to pull our leg Mr. Borg, since the PL has a lot to answer about land and property, specially to people like me who has got a property which has been taken form us by the then MLP and given as a gift to someone else, with an 18 Euro annual rent, which is not enough to pay one day of the rent I pay for a similar property to run my business from.
Inthom qazzistu lil kulhadd twedu l'impossibli, u qatt ma tlisnu kelma wahda kif ha tpattu al hsara li ghamiltu, hsara li hafna nies ghadhom issofru minna sal gurnata imqaddsa tal lum.
If any student is getting any benefit out of this than let it be, as these are the people who we will depend on tomorrow, an the PN always put the students interests before anything else, as education has always been looked at as an asset, not a treat. If only we had more intelligent and well educated people in Malta, we would be much better off!
