KSU should be given more of Student's House so it was sad to see the Labour Party seemingly working against the students' interest, Nationalist MP Karl Gouder said.

Mr Gouder was reaction to a call by Labour MP Owen Bonnici for an investigation by the Public Accounts Committee or the Auditor-General into whether government rules were broken when parts of Students' House at the University were handed to the KSU, which then rented them out for commercial purposes.

In a letter to PAC chairman Charles Mangion, Dr Bonnici observed that Student's House is government property and there are strict government rules on the transfer of properties.

It had emerged from a parliamentary question answered by the Minister of Education that part of the building had been handed to the University Students' Council for purposes of administration, he said. The decision was taken by the University.

The Students' Council had then rented out the lower floor to businesses, which paid their rents to the council.

Mr Gouder said that for decades Student's House served as a hub for all student organisations.

Considering the ever increasing number of students on campus and the ever increasing number of organisations on campus, the student body has been for quite a while now feeling the need to increase its physical space on campus.

Apart from commercial outlets, which served to offer study-related services on campus, there was a dire need for more office spaces for all student organisations.

As a result, KSU, together with University administration should find a way to ensure that more space was dedicated to student organisations and to find the correct balance and formula to accommodate commercial interests on Campus, Mr Gouder said.
