Surgeon is wanted for death of patient
Italian doctor allegedly removed artery instead of vein from leg
The police have asked for a European Arrest Warrant to be issued against an Italian surgeon who is wanted in connection with a case of alleged malpractice at St Luke’s Hospital five years ago, in which a patient died of complications.
Charges of involuntary homicide have been issued against the doctor. However, since he could not be found the police have asked for a European Arrest Warrant to be issued.
The doctor is expected to be arraigned during court proceedings related to the case, which started last week. The case is being heard behind closed doors, with the court having issued a ban on the reporting of most other details.
In a sitting yesterday, Police Inspectors Kevin Farrugia and Sandro Camilleri asked Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit to suspend the time bar until the doctor is found. The request was accepted.
A person cannot be charged in court if the prescription period on the crime – in this case 10 years – runs out. The doctor left Malta shortly after the failed operation at St Luke’s Hospital six years ago.
He is alleged to have removed an artery instead of a vein from a patient’s leg. The patient eventually died of complications despite various operations to save him.

If this were a Maltese surgeon, would he still be facing justice?!

I think that this Italian surgeon as we say in Maltese was a big `skarpan`. I do not recognize an artery from a vein not a doctor. If this surgeon was working with the department of health the selection board who has chosen him as a surgeon is responsible not the Maltese one. Such a complex operation is a team effort and profession and not one man show.

I'm sure there must be a reason. Why don't you look into it and let us all know? And while you are at it, explain the relevance of your question.

Nathalie, just a small reminder.....Malta is in the EU. When there is a job opening there is no Maltese, English or Italian, everyone is in the same boat.
The racism of Maltese people is incredible....can you kindly explain what relevance to the case what nationality the surgeon is?
Every time there is a mention of a Maltese person doing something abroad the article is followed by comments of praise.....I never find you saying "what is this guy doing in England...why didn't an Englishman do so and so"
