Some 80 fishermen of all ages got their rods and floats yesterday and raised about €2,000 for the annual charity campaign L-Istrina.

Young boys and old men baited their hooks and cast their lines into the calm sea, waiting patiently for their catch to bite.

The fishing marathon, organised by the Denċi Fishing Club Malta, took place at Pinto Wharf. It was split into two categories – children and adults. Ten of the participants were in the under-18 category.

The initiative offered a variety of prizes for the largest fish and the highest number of fish caught.

The money raised will be presented to the Malta Community Chest Fund during the 12-hour fundraising TV marathon on Boxing Day.
