I refer to Michael Bonnici’s letter Żebbuġ Road Resurfacing (December 12). Mr Bonnici is right to be dissatisfied with the works done in parts of Bishop Caruana Street. The Żebbuġ local council is also very disappointed with the quality of the works done and this issue was put forward by mayor Alfred Grixti during the council meetings of November 3 and December 5.

During these meetings the mayor explained that site inspections were carried out by the local council architects who confirmed the poor quality of the works and that the works done won’t be certified before proper remedial action is taken by the contractor. In the council meeting held on December 5, Mr Grixti tabled a motion, which was unanimously approved by the council, asking for the contractor to scarify and resurface parts of the road that have been certified as not being up to standard.

I assure Mr Bonnici that our council is very serious when handling public funds, especially on infrastructural projects, and it won’t pay even €1 until the works done are certified by our consultants to our satisfaction. The same approach will be taken by the council with regard to the Vjal il-Ħelsien project, which will be the biggest infrastructural project ever undertaken by any Żebbuġ administration.
