This extraordinary race involves over 50 grown men – many arguably old enough to know better – rowing while dressed up as Epiphany witches (befana).

A healthy crowd gathers wind, rain or shine to watch the befana paddle up Venice’s Grand Canal from San Toma in this annual tradition. Participants compete to reach the giant stocking that hangs from the Rialto Bridge.

This is not an official Comune sporting event, but rather annual festivity organised by the historic Cannotieri Bucintoro, a rowing club founded in 1882.

The nearest airport served from Malta in winter is Bologna (129 km away). Fly there with Ryanair.
