the day will come when Malta has to decide. Yes, there are many countries where growing marijuana is illegal, NO there are not many countries where you get 11 years for growing two plants on your balcony. It is decriminalized in many countries, Switzerland, Spain, Sweden, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic etc. and even in countries where it is not decriminalized the rules are very relaxed. As if you would get prison for growing two plants in any country in the European Union except Malta. So what - we get all the stupid things the European Union has to offer - speed camera's, taxes, rules and regulations but otherwise we play Taliban. How much does it cost the country to put someone into prison for 11 years for growing 2 plants - we are talking hundreds of thousand Euro's here ...

The article should read "Police, yet again, persecute the young users and fail to catch the pushers."
When is the police in Malta gonna start chasing the real criminals instead of running away from them? I personally agree with the moderate regulated use of cannabis, but don't they realise that by arresting users they are going after the victims and not the criminals? Are the police so stupid they don't know that arresting the victims will not solve the drug problem? What a waste of our taxes.
Get off your comfy behinds and please start preventing the real crimes and dangerous drugs...drunk driving, heroin users who will do anything for their next fix, rapists, vandals, thiefs etc. A stoned persons worst crime is peeing in their own pants for not wanting to walk the extra few feet to the bathroom. Shame on you for persecuting them and wasting our hard earned money on school playground games.

pffffffft lay off it, ffs... the police had better watch out for rough bouncers instead of piss their pants out of fear of arresting them, instead of chasing after a couple of GROWN MEN with pot... get a life man, and look out for some more serious crimes than carrying weed around...

I quote -
"In a brave and highly praiseworthy judgment, Mr Justice Mallia made another important point when he talked about the failed prison system which “has nothing correctional about it, but is rather serving the opposite function where people who are relatively clean are at great risk of coming out of prison worse than they went in”.

Unfortunate young adolescents who will have their police conduct and future jeopardized probably for having a single joint. Not fair, it is natural at that age to experiment. Unfortunately, the consequences are a shame to such called justice. Small amounts of Weed is acceptable throughout most of the westernized world.

er, no it's not. Cannabis is illegal in most "western" nations.
daniel Gordon
Dec 18th 2011, 22:08
C Cassar, yet again you fail.
Noel did not say "legal" but "Small amounts of Weed is acceptable....... ".
Are you so afraid of decriminalization and regulation?
Why?
Do you think that all of Malta will, overnight, become a nation of dopeheads? Do you really envisage the population rolling up?
daniel Gordon

As Paul says: How about concentrating on REAL crime.
As George says: Why is this even a News event?
As Johnathan says: Sad.
@ C Cassar: I am a grown adult user. Fully aware of my obligations to society. A loving husband. A responsible worker to all my colleagues.
What is the point of your argument?
Do you really think that it is only the youth who wish to regulate the use of cannabis?
I quote - “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.”
Yesterday we started to win.

C Cassar, I dont think you would recognise a literate and structured comment even if it was written in a newspaper in front of you.
Delusional - "A delusion is a false belief held with absolute conviction despite superior evidence. "
The superior evidence is on our side C Cassar,
Ranting - "To speak agressivly about somthing. or to take your own tangent about a subject and talk for a long time in a passionate manner."
Does my comment above, seem to you in anyway aggressive or off at a different angle to others? Passionate I certainly am. Ranting it is not.

I have a strange feeling that both Paceville goers and residents are more concerned about violent people, especially bouncers.
But those are too tough for us, aren't they?

So... the police do nothing when people are being beaten up savagely, even with the victims identifying the culprits, but if they spot a couple of harmless kids with a joint they pounce like starving lions. It's easy to see which is the easier target.

Its a pity they dont concentrate on real crime. A couple of youngsters having fun will now be ruined by criminalizing them.
In the meantime - how many drunk drivers drove home last night and got away with it? How many lives are in danger every single day in Malta due to reckless driving, but no lets not bother with them - lets go stop some teens having fun and enjoying there youth
what a joke

Hello!!!!! Carrying cannabis is a REAL crime. And if they were caught selling it they are, at the least, evading tax.
FYI, Al Capone in America, was never arrested for the crimes he did, but for tax evasion.

@ J Debono:
How on earth can you possibly be avoiding tax on an illegal substance?
Your lack of knowledge is embarressing.

Good. Keep the good work going and send the message out that the law is the law. Cannabis is illegal full stop and it's use only leads to futiure misery. A sure sign of addiction is when those who use the substance say they've been using it for yesr with "no" adverse affects. Unfortunately it's only those who don't use such substances that see the effects that they have.
Denial is the sure sign of addiction.
