A fierce fire in a farm on the outskirts of Zejtun was extinguished today before it spread to an area where a large number of empty gas cylinders were stored, eyewitnesses said.
The fire broke out at at about 1.30 p.m., producing a plume of smoke visible from Valletta and beyond.
The farm owner arrived soon after and found some tyres on fire. He tried to put out the flames with assistance from neighbours using fire extinguishers, but an old abandoned van was destoyed before they could make any headway.
The fire was eventually put out by fire-fighters of the Civil Protection Department.
A number of horses were moved from the area as a precaution.
The eyewitnesses said some 100 gas cylinders were stored some 20 meters away from the fire.
