I refer to the article Boathouses Must Not Get Power Supply (December 9).
I was walking with a few friends in Malta on Tuesday (December 6) and the following link contains a photographic description of some of what we experienced in and around the Armier squatter camp: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=40bf7ddefb51bbd8&id=40BF7DDEFB51BBD8%21104#cid=40BF7DDEFB51BBD8&id=40BF7DDEFB51BBD8%21112.
Although I realise that random disposal of garbage is happening all around the islands (despite an amazing free household and bulky garbage removal service), I find it appalling that Lawrence Gonzi and his government and Austin Walker and his minions have not only sanctioned all these shacks and condoned this illegal settlement from where most of the garbage probably originates, but that they are now considering providing them with a superior power supply as well.
Paid for by the taxpayers whose property these squatters have basically expropriated! How is it possible that people who treat their countryside like this are given added bonuses?
A few questions: How much of the power delivered at present is legally accounted for and how much is “tapped” or simply disappears. The mass of cables hanging all over in a thousand directions suggests the latter. This is very common in Third World countries.
The same question could be asked about the water supply.
I would also like to know how the sewage in this area is disposed of. I do realise of course that under normal circumstances, boat-houses do not need toilets. However, considering that most of the boathouses and shacks are inhabited (by people not boats) during the summer months, this natural, but somewhat distasteful, question must also be addressed. In case readers have never visited this area, it is very beautiful and could be a dream destination shared by Maltese and tourists alike if only the illegal, unsightly shacks were removed once and for all.
Enjoy the link and please try and envisage what sort of environmental disaster the government and the Malta Environment and Planning Authority are condemning the future generations of the Maltese islands to.
If this is merely a ruse to gain votes, which it obviously is, I find it despicable and even more Third World than the shacks.
