The parish church of St Lawrence was designed by Dun Ġużepp Diacono. The foundation stone was laid and consecrated by bishop Peter Pace on November 21, 1886. In 1889 the building was completed. On May 7, 1893 San Lawrenz was officially declared a parish.
The façade of this church appears like a flat plane but actually consists of a large central bay with two flanking panels and two smaller panels to the side, each extending upwards to the bell-towers. Each section is separated from the other by pilasters in the Doric order, which are used throughout the exterior of the church. The main portal has a moulded architrave, topped by a pediment and above is a bishop’s armorial escutcheon. The central level of the façade consists of a wide entablature attic, divided from the lower by a cornice.
The central bay has a carved panel with palm fronds, representing martyrdom. At the centre of the roof level is a plain frontispiece topped with a pediment.
On each side is a bell-tower of standard baroque design with pilasters on each corner and bell windows with balustrades, cornice with finials on each corner and all topped by a carved pinnacle.
The Malta Environment and Planning Authority scheduled the parish church as a Grade 1 monument on August 26, 2011 as per Government Notice 782.
