Last week, Malta’s kickboxing champion Daniel Zahra made history with a smooth transition from the amateur to the professional ranks, capturing the WKN – European light middleweight title after defeating Jose De Oliveira, of Portugal, at the MFCC.
The event organisers, Noel Mercieca and Isaac Chetcuti, of Gladiators Promotions, put on a superb show which kept the huge crowd entertained from start to finish.
The programme on the night consisted of the main event and 10 supporting bouts, showcasing kickboxing, K1 and classical boxing.
The highlight of the evening had the crowd roaring their support for the popular Maltese fighter.
Looking confident, Zahra wasted no time in taking the fight to his Portuguese opponent.
By round two, Zahra’s superiority was evident as he outpointed the surprised De Oliveira with a combination of kicks and punches.
De Oliveira had his moments but Zahra never allowed him to settle.
The Portuguese fighter showed true sporting spirit, lifting Zahra’s hand in victory even before the judges had issued their majority decision. It was indeed a well-deserved victory for Zahra.
