I fully concur with Joe Morana’s plea regarding the depilated state of the once beautiful Wignacourt Fountain (December 6).

As rightly stated, this fountain was scheduled as a grade 1 national monument by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority way back in 2008 (Government Notice 276/08 as published in the Government Gazette on March 28, 2008).

It is a pity that such heritage is being left to deteriorate. If one takes a closer look at one of the dolphins one will realise the extent of the damage being done.

When is the fountain going to be restored to its former glory? And once restored, wouldn’t it be a good idea for it to find its place on the Fleur-De-Lys roundabout at Sta Venera?

After all, this fountain is highly associated with the Wignacourt aqueducts, being the first fountain to be used after the building of the aqueducts that were built by the same Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt. The aqueducts used to carry water from Rabat to Valletta and a good part of them still run through Sta Venera.
