The clash between the bottom two sides in the standings saw Attard edge Senglea despite playing with 10 men for almost 60 minutes.

Attard made a good start but Darren Galea’s dismissal forced them to adopt a more prudent approach as the team from Cottonera tried to take advantage of the extra man. Despite being the better side for most of the match, particularly in the second half, Senglea were found wanting in attack and finished empty-handed.

Early on, a shot by Attard’s Farrugia seemed destined to hit the back of the net but Sciortino inter-vened to deflect the ball away for a corner.

Attard were dealt a blow on 33 minutes when referee Jude Amin Utulu sent off Galea for dissent.

This episode prompted Senglea to venture forward. A cross by Emeka found the unmarked Brincat whose first-time volley was stopped by the Attard keeper.

A minute before the break, Attard almost broke the deadlock but Dimcho Traykov’s overhead kick skimmed the woodwork.

On resumption, Senglea’s Alegbe dashed past his direct Attard markers but his powerful grounder went inches wide.

Galea’s cross on 58 minutes found Alegbe in the middle of the Attard box but his looping header was saved in style by Attard’s Ubberden.

The goal that decided the issue came 20 minutes from time when Traykov hit home from a free-kick from the edge of the Senglea box.

Senglea tried hard to salvage a point but their only real chance came when Sciortino tried his luck from the distance, only for the ball to roll the wrong side of the upright.
