Libyan air traffic controllers went on strike today, paralysing flights between the country's two key cities of Tripoli and Benghazi as well as international flights, officials said.

Several flights to the capital Tripoli and the eastern city of Benghazi were cancelled, and a Turkish Airlines flight had to divert to Djerba in southern Tunisia.

The source said the air traffic controllers are demanding better working conditions.

Yussef al-Whishi, the transport minister, visited the striking employees in an effort to find a solution, a source at the ministry said.

There were no flights to Malta today.
