A Somali migrant who arrived in Malta last week died at Hal Far detention centre this afternoon. The man had been in a group rescued from a dinghy 75 miles south of Malta by the AFM.

He fell ill suddenly at about 2.30 p.m. - having not complained of anything while a doctor was at the detention centre in the morning.

The migrant was taken to Floriana health centre where a doctor diagnosed gastro enteritis and diarrhoea. He was prescribed medicines and taken back to the detention centre.

On his return to the newly-refurbished detention centre he vomited again and lost consciousness.

A nurse who was on site found no pulse and he was declared dead soon afterwards.

Magistrate Francesco Depasquale is holding an inquiry, assisted by court expert Dr Mario Scerri.

Is there something that you know that we don't? the article doesn't give that much detail.

Doctors are not infallible, and can make unfortunate mistakes - having said that if it is a case of negilgence then action should be taken

In my ignorance of medical expertise, I am thinking this was a case of undiagnosed appendicitis. What is contagious about that?

It has yet to be seen whether the doctor was competent to examining this patient. It is premature to point fingers when we know nothing about the case. Presumably, the coroner will identify the cause of death in his report and the medical profession (at the behest of the court) will determine if there was negligence or incompetence.

What more can anyone say apart, from the obvious, that this was the ultimate unfortunate event for the deceased. I hope someone thinks of his dependants if he had any.

He wasn't lucky to live a life like we do? Cannot say really.

Cannot compare carrots with potatoes, yet in his own way, hopefully, he may have had a better one too.

Alas his time was up, got no other option when the Almighty becalls.

We should believe that he is better off now, do`nt we?
