The environmental health watchdog has recalled soup and sauce ladles produced by Flow-Villeroy and Boch from Hong Kong, because of the possible release of formaldehyde into food.
Formaldehyde is a colourless, strong-smelling gas often found in water-based solutions and commonly used as a preservative in mortuaries. Low levels can cause irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin, while people with asthma may be more sensitive to its effects.
The soup ladle (Suppenkelle) carries barcode 4003683354978 while the sauce ladle’s (Saucenkelle) barcode is 4003683354985.
A small quantity of these products has already been sold. The Health Inspectorate can be contacted on 2133 7333 or mhi@gov.mt.
