Supercars draw the crowds

More than 900 vehicles on static display in the Lufthansa Technik hangar area

A white Bugatti Veyron Gran Sport, one of the fastest production cars in the world, and a blue Pagani Zonda S were the main attractions at the sixth edition of Paqpaqli Għall-Istrina, held in aid of the Community Chest Fund.

With its supercar treats now becoming a tradition, the annual charity event is one of the most eagerly awaited in Malta

The annual motoring event featured more than 900 vehicles – ranging from the classic to the customised and vintage to viciously fast – on static display in the Lufthansa Technik hangar area of the Malta International Airport.

President George Abela accompanied chief designer Horacio Pagani for a spin in the €800,000 Zonda and later joined sales director Karsten Jacob to get a taste of the superfast €1.4 million Veyron.

Visitors could also feast their eyes on other stand-out models such as a Ferrari 458 Spider, the Lotus Evora S and Toyota’s Hilux Arctic Challenge on display at the hangar.

Other private and club-owned vehicles were on show in a feast for motor lovers.

Some 100 vehicles also took part in circuit and sprint events on the airport’s taxiway.

Thousands crowded the area while traffic jams stretched to Marsa and Qormi. Many parked near St Vincent de Paul in Luqa and caught a shuttle bus to the MIA.

With its supercar treats now becoming a tradition, the annual charity event is one of the most eagerly awaited in Malta. Last year, a €5 million Lamborghini Reventon, one of only 20 in the world, drew hundreds of curious visitors to the venue.
