Mdina restaurant named Malta’s best... yet again

Awarded for third time

Located in the old capital Mdina, de Mondion Restaurant has been named the country’s top eating place, winning the award for the third time since 2008.

The restaurant scored the highest points for food, service and ambience in the annual survey conducted by the Definitive(ly) Good Guide to Restaurants, supported by the Malta Tourism Authority, HSBC and Marsovin. More than 1,700 regular diners took part in the survey, the largest response to-date.

“We are delighted that 12 years on we are still considered to be the number one restaurant guide in Malta for objectivity and comprehensiveness,” managing director Lisa Grech said during the award-giving night. The awards were presented by Tourism parliamentary Secretary Mario de Marco.

The restaurants that received awards based on food, service, ambience and overall ratings (in order from top rated) were:

De Mondion, Blue Elephant, Oceana, Grill 3301, Palazzo Parisio and Gardens - The Luna Collection, The Arches, The Edge, Taste, Medina, Bottega del Vino, Patrick’s Tmun, Sa Re Ga Ma, Quadro, Tarragon, TemptAsian, Tartarun, Pulitos, Hibiki, Nuvo, Gazebo, The Terrace, Ta’ Karolina, Kon Tiki, Buffalo Bill’s, Ristorante Tigne, Ta’ Frenċ, Shiva’s, Nargile, Can Thai, Spice Island, Le Luci Di Marsascala, The Lord Nelson, Essence, Zest, Sciacca, Rebekah’s, La Mere, Villa Brasserie, The Boat House, Al Molo and Zeri’s.

Additional awards

Best Maltese Food – Ta’ Marija.
Best Business Entertainment – Tarragon.
Most Romantic Restaurant – Tarragon.
Best Children-Friendly – Mamma Mia.
Best Restaurant for Vegetarian Options – Da Marina.
Best Restroom – Blue Elephant.
Best Value for Money – Mamma Mia.
Best Service – de Mondion.
Best Ambience – Palazzo Parisio and
Gardens – The Luna Collection.

Patrick’s Tmun wine list was rated for two awards, including The People’s Choice and best Presentation & Accessibility and best overall.

Ta’ Frenċ wine list was voted best for fine wines and The Arches had the best list of Maltese wines.

Good comment. Just because the chef changes duty. How serious is that!

I got exactly that experience not so long ago when I had dinner at one of the top notch restaurants in that list. The smell of cooking oil was noticable from half a block away from the front door of the restaurant . The small maltese loaves served during the meal were far from fresh, service indifferent , portions miniscule .Worse still was the stomach upset experienced within hours of eating at that place.

Very good point Amy, and your comment is not only relevant to persons with limited mobility. It is relevant to those families with babies and young children in pushchairs, not to mention wheelchair bound persons who's independence is compromised by having to rely on the help of third parties to get around.
