I knew all along, for quite a few years, that Simon Busuttil, former head of Malta-EU Information Centre and now MEP, would finally admit that he is in favour of a federal European superstate, despite his many past pronouncements that with EU membership “Malta’s sovereignty will be strengthened”.

During the recent public debate, Europe – Where Are We Going?, Dr Busuttil was quoted saying he is in favour of a political union in the EU! If Dr Busuttil’s wish were to come about – which I hope will never happen – the last few vestiges of sovereignty left will disappear completely.

Of course, Dr Busuttil knows where his bread is being buttered. He also knows that the break-up of the EU is no longer a “myth” repeated by eurosceptics. It is accepted as a possibility by the highest echelons of the EU. And if the break-up of the EU were to happen, Dr Busuttil knows perfectly well that this would be the end of all the butter on his bread.

No wonder he is yearning for political union.
