The highlight of yesterday’s programme at the Marsa racetrack was the final of the Coronation Cup for flat horses on a short distance of 1,250m.

This race, organised with the support of Burmarrad Commercials, formed part of the 57th meeting of the season.

Eight horses took part in the Coronation Cup. As expected, Fyelehk (Michael Sultana) was the first horse out of the blocks.

This horse led all the way and triumphed easily by three lengths from Cheeky Jack (Ramon Grima), Tarruji (Oliver Briffa) and Ollie Fliptrik, driven by Italian jockey Antonino Fusco.

For Fyelehk this was its third win of the year.

After the race, Mario Gauci, on behalf of the sponsors, presented the trophy to Sultana and the owner of the winning horse.

In the Premier Class race, Fire (Marco Refalo) hit the front around 400m from the finish.

This Swedish eight-year-old went on to obtain its third win of the season, eight lengths ahead of Think Yatzee (Clint Vassallo).

Magic de Assigny (Julian Farrugia) and Mystere d’Urfist (Mario Baldacchino) were third and fourth respectively. Fire clocked an excellent average time of 1.14.8” per kilometre.

Yesterday’s card also included two races for Gold Class trotters.

Jitterbug (Andrew Farrugia) started slowing down some 250m from the post and was overtaken by Ogor (Frenċu Cassar) for the latter’s first win at Marsa.

Victory Toll (Julian Farrugia), Napolitano Sun (David Ellul) and French newcomer Ouragan d’Any (Brian Hili) followed in that order.

In the other Gold Class race, Janitor (Carmel Cauchi) upped its pace 600m from the finishing line to win in style.

Count of Life (Michael Ellul), Mint Spirit (Peter Paul Said) and Norton Journeau (Julian Farrugia) finished behind in second, third and fourth places respec-tively.

Another programme of races will be held tomorrow at Marsa.

The card includes the President’s Cup final for Premier Class trotters.
