Tony Zahra recently became the first tourism professional to be honoured by the Malta Association Hospitality Executives Board (MAHE) for his contribution to the local tourism industry.

Mr Zahra, CEO of Alpine Holding Ltd, received his award on November 29. Other presentations are scheduled this month and the MAHE hopes to give out awards on an annual basis from now on.

In 1967, Mr Zahra and his brother Winston set up the Alpine group, which today has interests in hotels, car hire (Europcar Malta), incoming and outgoing travel, and pest control.

Over the past 30 years he has been appointed to various government positions, including directorships at Malta International Airport plc and Air Malta plc.

In 1994, Mr Zahra was appointed Honorary Consul of Lithuania for Malta, a position he still holds today. He has been decorated with the cross of officer of the Order of Lithuania Grand Duke Gediminas for services rendered to that Baltic state.

Mr Zahra remains very active in the tourism and financial services industries. He is current president of the Malta Hotel and Restaurants Association.
