The start of a new season brings along with it myriad new colours. Francesca Falzon shares a fair dose of tips and ideas on how to decorate your home.

Of course, everyone has their own favourite colours. These may vary from vibrant to soft or earth colours. Many a time, the choices one makes for home interiors would automatically indicate what part of the spectrum of colours one has most at heart.

Your personality should lead you to choose the colour scheme that best suits your home

Here is a brief guide to utilise each colour to its full potential.

Greens: Very often a vibrant green brings about a sense of relaxation. It is best used as a background or base colour. An eye-catching wallpaper may give your hallway a different dimension altogether.

Such a shade may be adequately combined with monochrome colours like black, white and charcoal. If you wish to give your ambience an extra edge, then combine bright greens with crimson or gold.

Do not hesitate to be inspired by nature’s most beautiful assets and use wood furniture to bring out the best of this colour. In this way, you would have easily given a garden vibe to your house. Walnut and cherry would create an interesting contrast.

Reds, purples and pinks: These colours may be considered daring. Nevertheless, even the most conventional personality may use them in moderation to create a stunning look. Consider using exotic shades of pink and orange to give a touch of originality to your home décor.

However, do not go overboard in large rooms. Try to use smaller zones of these blocked colours on a white background to give your space a fresh look. Pillarbox red may be accompanied by creamand oak to create a warm atmosphere. Finally, add a touch of woven draperies to give your spot a softer look.

Blues and greys: The theme given to an area of your house very much depends on what shade of these colours you choose. A bright blue might give your room a Mediterranean flavour and is best used in a bright room where light may enhance this motif.

To add warmth to a blue scheme, wooden flooring would be the perfect choice, while a lively atmosphere can easily be created by experimenting with whites.

Neutral colours: These colours are best complemented with a mouthful of texture to give your home a sophisticated look. You may also combine these shades but limit yourself to not more than three.

Moreover, the textures chosen may include real wood flooring, linens and smooth leather. Allow yourself to feel inspired by the variety of stone touches available to give your space a soothing effect. This set of colours can be used with a natural wooden surface in a kitchen to give it a clean look.

Yellows and oranges: These two colours may well be in fashion but some shades have come to stay. Feed your desire to experiment with orange bases by adding touches of turquoise, silver or even black.

These combinations could be the ultimate energisers of your living room. They may also be combined with touches of stainless steel in a kitchen to give the culinary experience an added zest. On the contrary, they should be avoided in bedrooms.

Contrasting colours: These colours are also known as complementary colours and may be a perfect choice for someone who is after a bold look. In fact, these colours are the exact opposites on the colour wheel, but when combined, they strengthen each other.

This may be exemplified by a red and green colour scheme chosen for a kitchen. It may be utilised to demarcate the dining from the cooking area, while maintaining the original theme of your space.

Keeping it simple: This concept may be achieved with all sorts of colours. However, if opting for blues, start off with a primary blue shade and then add on touches of sky and navy, up to the darkest of blue shades available.

Blues tend to pivot towards a refreshing look but adding wooden furniture may still give warmth to your space.

This idea may well suit a variety of other tones. In fact, purples and pinks may be the perfect choice to create a relaxing scheme in your bedroom.

Simply choose your preferred shades which sit next to each other on the colour wheel to establish your ideal mixture of tonalities. Ideally, one should not exceed a choice of more than three colours: one for the walls, one for decorations and another for furniture.

Going monochrome: Monochrome colours are a relatively late introduction but have become exceedingly popular. This is manifested mostly in the choice of grey kitchens. However, they have also been adapted to various other places within a household.

There is no hard and fast rule as to which colour should predominate. In fact, being such a neutral choice, monochrome shades may be layered and mixed without one tone standing out from the rest.

On the other hand, touches of black may be just the essential ingredient to give your décor a bold look.

Ultimately, it is your own personality that should lead you into choosing the colour scheme that best suits your home.

Create your own palette of colours and turn your home space into your favourite place to be this season.
