A 62-year-old man has been condemned to a six-month suspended jail term after he admitted stealing two bulk packets with 1,600 cigarettes from a shop at the airport arrivals' lounge yesterday.
Emanuel Attard, a Maltese resident in the UK, had just flown in from London when he stole the cigarettes.
His counsel told the court this morning that Mr Attard is a chain smoker and he was low on cash.
The court said such behaviour was unacceptable but decided to hand down a suspended sentence because Mr Attard had no previous convictions.
