I refer to the report Graduate Berates No-Show Lecturers (December 1) and am utterly disappointed at the selective reporting of my speech.
As all those present at the ceremony, including the faculty dean and a number of lecturers can confirm, my speech far from “berated” any lecturers.
What was interpreted as “berating” was only a mild suggestion for lecturers to try to inform faculties beforehand if they are not able to attend the lecture. In fact, in the same speech, I also emphasised that students should also do their best to attend such lectures.
Throughout the whole speech, I made it a point to thank all the staff at the University as our graduation would not have been possible without their hard work. In no way was the speech disrespectful of any University lecturers or staff, as hinted in the report.
It is also important to note that all graduation speeches are examined and approved by the University Students’ Council board.
