Air France to operate Malta-Toulouse service

Air France is planning to fly to 16 new destinations including Malta from a new base which it is to set up in from Toulouse, airline officials said today.

Other destinations will include Berlin, Prague and Vienna. Services start in April.

The new hub in the southwestern city is part of the airline's efforts to fend off forays into tis home market by low cost airlines.

Air France established a hub in the Mediterranean city of Marseille in October and is also planning to increase services in Nice.

The new hubs are part of a program to restore medium-haul, point-to-point routes’ profitability by the end of 2013, he said. Those services include flights from Paris Orly as well as French airports outside the capital city.

The airline will assign 10 Airbus A320-series planes to Toulouse.

Other routes served from Toulouse will include Athens,  Brussels, Geneva, Hamburg  Malaga, Seville, Naple, Venice,  Istanbul, Tunis, Casablanca and Marrakesh.

Competition is good, very good. Especially if it saves the consumer a lot of money. The government should consider doing the same open competition with the pharmaceutical companies. Talk about a gross and very controlled monopoly?

    A competition, not really :
    - Yesterday, two hours for a direct flight Toulouse-Malta with AirMalta, company at the same level, for me, that Air France.
    - Today, more than five hours for a flight Toulouse-Malta : Toulouse-Frankfort (KLM) then Frankfort-Malta (AirMalta)
    - Tomorrow, two direct flights Toulouse-Malta, by week, with Air France.

Good! As long as it's fair competition it's healthy. If Air France can operate this route profitably - good luck to them, and if Air France can do this - Airmalta should do so too!

American Airlines files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection ... 6 days ago and the other airlines arent in good shape either.

The low cost airlines are `the only` ones making a profit as they dont allow their staff to join unions and they only hire the staff they need.

Open competition is fine.... but at the moment, it isnt a level playing field.
