As a Scot, I take grave exception to Peter Murray’s describing George VI as “the King of England” (November 30). He wasn’t. He was the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

For Mr Murray’s information, the first king of the United Kingdom was a Scot in 1603 – James VI of Scotland and James I of Great Britain.

As to whether Malta wishes to keep the George Cross on its flag, I am totally indifferent. Great Britain gave the award in recognition of Malta’s bravery.
