Art installation in aid of YMCA

YMCA Homeless has set up an artistic installation at the Embassy complex in Valletta as part of its Christmas campaign.

The aim is to raise funds for YMCA Homeless Services, including Dar Niki Cassar homeless shelter, which currently houses 26 people, and the YMCA Drop-in Centre, which provides community service on a more generic level.

It has been designed by artists Clayton Micallef, Edward Briffa and Isaac Azzopardi, with the assistance of Wasteserv, YMCA volunteers and residents, and other companies which have lent their support.

The installation is made up of recycled plastic tubes going from one level to another. The tubes represent the journey people go through to achieve independence and the transition from being homeless to independent living.

Martin Bugelli, head of the European Commission Representation in Malta, officially inaugurated the artistic installation by donating €1,277.

He said: “In view of the official year of volunteering coming to a close we proudly support the sterling work done by YMCA Homeless in the community.

“YMCA manages to provide professional and much needed services. Through its cost-effective programmes it supports most of the homeless people requiring shelter and support in Malta.”

The installation will be in place until January.
