An Armed Forces team returned to Malta yesterday after participating in anti-piracy operations off Somalia.

The 12 Maltese soldiers were given a warm welcome by relatives and senior AFM officers as they returned to Malta on board the HNLMS Zuiderkruis, their home for the past few weeks. The mission was organised in association with the Dutch Navy.

The Maltese soldiers took part in escort duties for World Food Programme vessels that delivered essential food aid to Somalia. Protection against pirates was also provided for vulnerable vessels sailing off the coast of Somalia.

A small AFM team is also serving in Uganda training Somali policemen as part of an EU mission.
