Ivory Coast’s Laurent Gbagbo will be brought before the International Criminal Court for the first time on Monday when he will face charges of crimes against humanity, the court said.

“The initial appearance of Laurent Gbagbo is scheduled for Monday, December 5 at 1400,” (1300 GMT) the ICC said in a statement, after he was transferred to the custody of the court in The Hague in the early hours of yesterday.

At the first appearance, his identity will be confirmed, the charges against him and his rights will be read out under the Rome Statute, the statement added.

“At the end of this first appearance, the pre-trial chamber will set the date of the next step in the pre-trial proceedings: the hearing on the confirmation of charges,” the ICC added.
