Blood urgently needed
The National Blood Transfusion Service has urged healthy people to donate blood at its centre next to St Luke’s Hospital in Guardamangia, which is open seven days a week between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The appeal comes as reserves of some blood groups run low: some operations may have to be cancelled in cases of emergency. Singer Eleanor Cassar (picture) responded to the call. “There is nothing more noble than the act of giving blood and saving lives,” she said.
Alcohol and food high in fat content should be avoided before donating blood.

I went to donate blood a couple of weeks ago and I was told that mine is no good because I lived in UK for most of my life. Because I lived there through The Mad Cow Disease period.
In UK I signed the Donor Card years ago, but on my visit to the National Blood Transfusion Centre I asked whether I can be a body parts donor and I was told that the same as to my blood applies. A big NO.
Is this right?
It is like saying that because I've been with a prostitute no other woman will have me!

It leaves me flabbergasted whenever I see the call for blood donation . Why is this in such a populated country ?
Is it fear or ignorance or both ?
As an X regular blood donor which I am so sorry I cannot nowadays continue doing so becouse of age etc. I do feel that people are missing out on the maybe " selfish feeling " of feeling so good and proud of having helped and maybe saved a life . More publicity and education should be given on this subject in all types of media . More so at a young age with children at school .

Just being gay does NOT exclude you from donating blood, as far as I know. Promiscuity does, even with hetero's. Amongst the millions of dogmas still afflicting our society, there is one that associates gays automatically with promiscuity, which, from my experience with gay friends, has absolutely nothing to do.
If you are not promiscuous, I suggest you ask more seriously if you really care to donate - and if negated just on the grounds of being homosexual, ask for an explanation.
