Investing for beginners

Malta University Consulting is holding a 25-hour course themed ‘Investing for beginners’ at the University Residence, Lija, from December 15.

Spread over 10 weeks, the course is aimed at people who would like to learn how to invest effectively and wisely but who do not have the requisite financial background or academic training.

Participants will be taught the basics of investing including the difference between stocks and bonds and mutual funds and exchange trade funds. The course programme will also feature the basic tools required to analyse traditional investments, and understand the importance of building diversified portfolios.

Markets drivers, macro economics, the business cycle, and the workings and interdependence of the financial markets will be discussed and participants will learn how to use Morningstar and other financial websites as effective investment tools.

The course will be led by Joseph Portelli, a portfolio manager with Liongate Capital Management, and a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta’s Banking and Finance Department.
