Olympics: India will resist pressure to boycott the London Olympics over sponsorship by a US company linked to the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, in which thousands of people died. Indian Olympic Association president Vijay Kumar Malhotra told AFP they would not pull out of the Games over the deal with Dow Chemical, which bought Union Carbide, the firm blamed for the lethal gas leak from a pesticide factory.
Basketball: NBA players made their first moves toward ratifying a tentative settlement agreement with team owners on Monday, starting the process of recertifying their union so they can vote on a new deal. The move came as a group of players, who filed an anti-trust lawsuit, asked a federal judge to stay any action on the lawsuit while final details of a settlement are being hammered out.
Ryder Cup: The 2014 Ryder Cup will take place at Gleneagles from Sep-tember 26 to 28. Europe are the holders of the biennial match between Europe and the US, having triumphed in Wales last year, when the event went into a fourth day for the first time in the tournament’s history due to adverse weather. Scotland’s First Minister Alex Salmond estimated the Scottish economy would benefit by up to £100 million from the event.
Judo: Japan’s retired double Olympic gold medallist Masato Uchishiba was fired as a university coach yesterday for sexually harassing a female student. Uchishiba, 33, who won the 66kg title at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, had been coaching the women’s judo team at Kyushu University of Nursing and Social Welfare in Kuma-moto since April last year.
