A man was yesterday rescued by a Malta-based Italian Military Mission helicopter after falling ill on a chemical tanker 35 nautical miles north east of Malta.

The captain of the Arionas issued a maritime distress call that a person on board was experiencing stomach and chest pains and running a fever.

The call was made at about 12.35 p.m.

The helicopter winched the man up and flew him to Mater Dei Hospital.
