I refer to Maurice Mizzi’s letter Birds Are Animals Too (November 26).

Animal Rights Group, which consists solely of volunteers, are in total agreement when he stated that birds are animals too. In fact our statute specifies the fact that our aims are to defend “all God’s creatures”.

Indeed Mr Mizzi can join us every time we rush with an injured bird to a veterinarian, and yes, these birds, among others, also include thrushes, pigeons and ducks which require immediate treatment. We also work closely with other organisations that focus solely on birds.

ARG doesn’t just protest or condemn; it works to change current situations and laws as well as work caringly and closely with many forms of nature on a daily basis. It sent in its recommendations for the new Animal Welfare Act No. 439 putting forth suggestions where it also specifically mentioned protection of birds from various forms of cruelty.

Writing protest letters to highlight a real issue which needs attention is a step in the right direction.

Perhaps Mr Mizzi would be less sarcastic about the work our organisation does or what he assumes does not do, if he were to put pen aside for a while and spend some time working actively with us. He is more than welcome.
