Maurice Mizzi, in his letter Birds Are Animals Too (November 26), seems amazed that Animal Rights Group and the SPCA do not offer their support towards his ludicrous crusade. He even suggests a name change should they, similar to all other sensible people, opt to ignore his hogwash.
In a previous letter of his – Bird Shooting Is Animal Cruelty, So Why Not Protest? (July 24) – Mr Mizzi stated: “I am not young and fused.”
Apart from confusing the name of a correspondent who wrote about an unfortunate unretrieved starling, Mr Mizzi also seems to be forgetting the obvious reason why animal welfare groups ignore his pleas.
An article in The Times entitled Malta’s Dolphin Park Listed Among World’s ‘Cruellest’ Destinations (August 3, 2008) gives Peta’s (People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals) views of a Maltese business venture that profits from the exploitation of animals.
Other foreign and local organisations aired these same views, which can be accessed by visting www.internationalanimalrescue.org/news/2003/99/Another+dolphin+dies+at+Mediterraneo.html. These include International Animal Rescue, British Divers Marine Life Rescue, Marine Connection, the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, the World Society for the Protection of Animals, RSPCA International, the Humane Society of the United States/Humane Society International, Cetacean Society International, the Earth Island Institute International Marine Mammal Project, International Animal Rescue (Malta), Nature Trust (Malta), World Animal Conscience, Moviment Graffiti, Island Sanctuary and Catcare Association.
According to a Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society report (1998) about this business venture, entitled The Dolphin Traders (go to www.eurocbc.org/dolphintraders.pdf), “the main financial supporter of the project appears to be Chev. Maurice Mizzi, a Maltese businessman”.
If the person mentioned in the report is the same Maurice Mizzi and if what is being alleged is true, Mr Mizzi might care to explain why he only expects support for his perceived cruelty to birds as a result of hunting. Are dolphins not “animals too”?
I am quite sure that, following his relentless nonsensical anti-hunting diatribes that never fail to amuse, several people await his answer.
