A newly graduated notary got to closely experience the law at work when he landed behind bars for allegedly resisting the police yesterday.

The incident happened when the police booked the driver of the bus he and his friends had hired to celebrate the acquisition of their new degree.

The police said the student, from Żurrieq, tried to punch a policeman who had issued a ticket because the bus was parked illegally. The student is expected to be arraigned in court.

A fellow student, who called The Times, denied that the young man threw a punch or that he provoked the police. She said that at about 5 p.m. the bus stopped near the police station in St Julians and seconds later several police officers turned up to fine the driver.

She claimed the young graduate intervened to tell the police not to issue a ticket because the driver had only stopped in that spot after he (the graduate) had dropped his spectacles out of a window and wanted to pick them up.

The student was released from the police station at about 6.30 p.m. – early enough to join his friends celebrating at Ryan’s pub nearby.
