Children are dicing with death on the roads, with some even texting or phoning as they cross the street, according to a British survery.

Most youngsters are also not ensuring they are clearly seen by oncoming traffic, the poll by insurance company Admiral found. Based on responses from 1,000 children aged seven to 12, the survey showed:

Eight per cent cross the road while talking on phones, texting or listening to an MP3 player;

18 per cent never follow the Green Cross Code;

Only 48 per cent cross in well-lit places when it is dark;

Only 33 per cent wear reflective clothing and 25 per cent wear anything brightly coloured;

Ten per cent do not do anything differently when it is dark.

Admiral managing director Sue Longthorn said: “As we move into the winter months it’s paramount to be more aware on the roads as a pedestrian.

“With fewer hours of daylight, it’s harder for motorists to see pedestrians as it is, but even more so if the pedestrians don’t take precautions to make themselves more visible.

“Children need to switch off their electronic devices, follow the Green Cross Code and make sure that motorists can easily see them when they are crossing the road.”
