Eleven police cars fail VRT
Eleven police cars failed their VRT out of a total of 100 this year, Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said in reply to a parliamentary question.
Last year, 103 cars were submitted for the VRT. Five failed and four passed after repairs.
The question was asked by Labour MP Michael Falzon.

Yeah and a particular Ford Focus Station Wagon continues to spew black smoke day after day up the Savoy area.
Any idea why?

I saw a couple of police officers at the Blata l'Bajda flyover emptying 4 large water bottles that contained petrol into their police car that had run out of fuel.
That's a fine example I thought!
In places like UK, it is illegal to buy petrol in a container not designed for this job. Look around you come summer, and see the boat owners buying diesel and petrol in plastic bottles and cans that are not fit to hold inflammable liquid.

I am not surprised. I have sent SMS messages to the emissions system about some police cars I have seen on the road. This is not the only problem of not leading by example... sometimes I see them with a break light out and often not using their turn signals among other things. And can someone explain why I can easily identify cars on the road with hazards (like a long ladder), driving at night without lights, etc. and a police car will just pass by them without saying anything?

Since most of these cars are on the road a LOT more than nowmal cars, are they still required to sit for a test every two years after the first 4 years?
Especially considering patrol cars which do an average of 8hours+ on the road everyday!
Also, is the VRT done at an independent garage with strict adherence to VRT rules as it is for normal cars? Are any additional requirements placed on vehicles that might be pushed to limits of endurance in emergency?

11% failure.... shouldn't the Police force lead by example? Or is this a case of do as I say and not as I do?

This morning I was walking in Fgura close to Haz-Zabbar. When I came to cross the street I stopped as a police vehicle was approaching. The police vehicle turned to enter the street where I was standing. I was really disapponted when the police vehicle's light indicator were off. This is not the first time that I witnessed such negligence from police vehicles. No wonder that the descipline on our roads is very bad.

Failed the VRT you're not kidding, i telephoned three time in the past 18 months regarding police vehicles spewing out black smoke, drinving behind these clapped out vehicles Blimey i though Mt.Etna was erupting close by. Its ok to plaster fine tickets on the average Joe driver, but i suggest getting your own house in order first, or as we say back home get your priorities in order (H)officer

VRT failure for police cars is a lesser evil. More importantly, most police drivers would not stand a chance of passing a decent driving test. One hand hanging out, not using turn indicators, driving slowly in the outer lane, smoking while driving, tailgating, parking haphazardly, you name it, you see police drivers doing it. It is hard to believe that the Commissioner, not to mention the Minister, is unaware of these matters. What remedial action is being taken, if any?

that doesn't include police driving without seatbelts .. observing the cars leaving the Hamrun police station i'd say about 50% don't bother to put on a seatbelt.

Only eleven??? With all the bald tyres one sees on police vehicles I am surprised the figure is so low. Do the drivers of these vehicles NEVER check them over? - - Lights tyres, water bottles, and such are surely the responsibilty of the driver, and should be reported so problems can be rectified ( I believe the process is called maintenance? LOL)

As far as i know all police cars are petrol , the larger focus use a 1.8 petrol . And since when are the police importing cars from the uk too ?
Mr Tony Gatt

Judging by the wrecks I've seen they obviously don't send their cars to some of the more lenient
VRT stations!

stringent, I think you mean ?
Mr Tony Gatt

@ Dave Alan Caruana
What I meant was some of the cars (not police cars) I've seen must have had a very lenient test to pass.

This would not surprise me with the amount of BLACK smoke some of these police cars belch out (NOTE the ones recently imported from the UK).

CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN TO ME,,,,,,,,,,, HOW ON EARTH YOU SEE SOME CARS, VANS AND TRUCKS ESPECIALLY,,,,,,,,, WHICH ARE LITERALLY BELCHING SMOKE ON THE ROADS??
ALSO,,,,, SOME VEHICLES ARE SCRAP...... LITERALLY.
I FAIL TO UNDERSTAND HOW THEY PASS THE VRT TESTS.
ARE THE WARDENS THERE ONLY TO SLAP FINES?? WHY DONT THEY CONCENTRATE ON THESE THINGS AS WELL??

I call them Compact Marsa Power Station on 4 Wheels.
But yes, I do agree police/wardens should stop such cars and perform an exhaust test on site. If they fail it slightly they are fined, but if the smoke is terrible then it should be towed away and not allowed on the road.

When you actually see a warden on "point duty" at the bottom of Tat-Targa Hill leading to Burmarrad and he does not arrest a vehicle that is being blatantly driven without number plates and obviously without tax and insurance, it makes you wonder.
It seems that car dealers (they habitually do this sort of thing) have pretty good contacts.

It's simple Mr/Ms Ferriggi
Two different cars but only one set of registered number plates. So only one car needs to pass the VRT Test. The other one is literally scrap. All you need to do is look closer.
