The third edition of the President’s Charity Fun Run will be held next Sunday.

The run starts from in front of San Anton Palace, Attard, at 10 a.m., while the walk starts from in front of Casa Leone in St Venera at the same time. Both the run and the walk end in front of the Grandmaster’s Palace in Valletta.

The main aim of the run is to raise funds for the Malta Community Chest Fund. Participants pay a €10 fee on application, which entitles them to a participation bib and commemorative T-shirt.

The first run, which was held in December 2009, attracted 5,000 participants. Last year this rose to 8,000.

It is advisable that participants intersperse jogging with fast walking, leaving the walking for the hills, especially at Fleur de Lys and the short steeper rise in front of the MUSEUM at Blata l-Bajda. St Anne’s Street in Floriana is also slightly uphill.

The rest of the route, which is just under seven kilometres long, is a nice easy downhill.

Ideally, prospective participants should have jogged a few times at an easy pace to prepare their body for the demands of the run. However, it is not recommended to run on the day before the event as the body will need more than a day to recover.

Participants should jog at a pace where they are able to control their breathing, and they are at liberty to reduce to little more than walking pace if need be.

The joggers will easily spread out for the best part of a kilometre by the finish. On average, participants should arrive in Valletta after about 43 minutes. However, even if participants take longer to complete the run they should still arrive in time to join the massive crowd gathering from way before the Grandmaster’s Palace.

Applications may be downloaded from the website www.funrun.org.mt or from San Anton Palace or the Palace, Valletta.
