EU Economy Commissioner Olli Rehn said yesterday that he could not envisage the collapse of the euro but warned that Italy’s high borrowing costs were “worrying”.

“I do not see the euro falling down, definitely,” Mr Rehn said after meeting with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti in Rome.

Mr Rehn also said that if Italy’s high borrowing costs continue this “will have a negative impact on the financial sector and on the real economy and therefore on economic growth”.

“The evolution of the bond yields of Italy have been worrying in the past weeks and days,” he added.
