Night owls are heading north for the best open-late destinations, according to a travellers’ poll.

Liverpool and Manchester are the best nightlife places in the UK, reviews on the TripAdvisor website showed.

And only two of the top 10 in the nightlife list were southern England destinations. London was in third position, with Brighton fifth in a list that also included Glasgow, Leeds, Cardiff, Belfast, Blackpool and Edinburgh.

TripAdvisor spokesman Emma Shaw said: “Liverpudlians should be thrilled their city has been crowned Britain’s best nightlife destination.

“The city boasts thriving live music and comedy scenes, along with great clubs, bars and restaurants.”

TripAdvisor added: “Despite being world-renowned for its extensive club scene, endless pubs and great bars, London was beaten by the lively north in the nightlife stakes.

“To be named Britain’s third-best nightlife destination is an impressive finish, but lovers of London may have expected it to be placed higher.”
