The Malta Information Technology Agency celebrated the successes and achievements of its employees through the MITA Awards for Excellence. Six awards were given at an event that has been organised for the past 13 years.

The Transformation Award, recognising an individual’s positive attitude towards transformation which resulted into a tangible benefit for the agency and other government entities was presented to Wayne Valentine, as the project manager for the new Corporate Data Centre in Santa Venera. This €7m investment is vital for the rollout of major future national ICT projects such as the new e-government platform, e-learning, e-health and the new e-ID cards.

The Innovation Award was given to Rene Briffa in recognition of his ability to execute a complex project, the upgrading of the government’s Corporate Active Directory Services, in a seamless manner over a period of six months. This system is used by all government knowledge workers to authenticate in order to use services that are centrally provided by MITA, such as internet and e-mail.

The Excellence Award was won by the cross-departmental team that handled the procurement and contracting phase of the e-learning solution and interactive whiteboards. The team was made up of Ronald Abdilla, Mario Cilia Attard, Marouska Cilia Barbara, Noel Cuschieri, Ray Mifsud, Claudio Muscat and Stephen Spiteri.

The most prestigious award, the Outstanding Achievement Award, was this year awarded to two people, Fabianne Ruggier and Wayne Valentine. Ms Ruggier, a consultant in the human capital department at MITA, is key to the success of the eSkills Alliance through which key stakeholders from the ICT industry, academia and government discuss and implement ICT awareness and educational initiatives aimed at reducing the skills gap in the ICT industry. In this year’s edition of the MITA Awards for Excellence, the agency introduced two new awards. The Extra Mile Award, recognising the generosity of an employee towards colleagues and the wider community, was given to Noel Tabone, while the IT Contractor Award, which recognises a supplier’s positive attitude throughout the duration of the contract was awarded to Transactium Limited.

MITA is Malta’s largest ICT organisation and the main government agency for ICT, with over 330 employees.
