The police will not say whether Nationalist MP Robert Arrigo is under investigation over football bribery allegations.
Asked to comment on the Prime Minister’s statement that Mr Arrigo is not under investigation, the police answered cagily: “Kindly note that the police are looking into allegations of football corruption. As inquiries are in progress, it is not prudent to comment further.”
Mr Arrigo is a former mayor of Sliema and a former president of Sliema Wanderers FC.
Asked whether Mr Arrigo should resign from his post as parliamentary assistant in light of alleged investigations involving him, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi last week disagreed.
“Robert Arrigo went to the Police Commissioner himself with an e-mail containing allegations, which he felt should be investigated. So he is not being investigated but he went to the police on his own volition,” Dr Gonzi had said, praising Mr Arrigo’s behaviour.
Mr Arrigo made the same comments when contacted. “I’m not involved in any investigation. I’m not being investigated. I only passed on some e-mails I received to the Police Commissioner,” he said.
