The Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST) is accepting project proposals for the National Research and Innovation (R&I) Programme 2011. The MCST provides state financing in the form of grants for research, development and innovation in science and technology through this programme.
The focus of the programme is technology transfer between academia and industry with particular focus on the four priority sectors identified in the National R&I Strategy: Environment and Energy Resources; ICT; Value Added Manufacturing; and Health and Biotech.
The timeframe of project proposals submitted through this call should typically be between one and three years. Conversely, projects with different timeframes may be considered at the discretion of the MCST. The MCST is looking to fund projects of between €50,000 and €200,000.
The submission and evaluation of project proposals will be divided into two sections. The first stage requires interested applicants to submit a preliminary proposal. Moreover, following the evaluation, these proposals will be shortlisted to a final evaluation stage requiring proposers to submit a detailed proposal.
This programme complements the Malta Enterprise Scheme to promote research and development in industry. Eligible participants include Maltese legal entities such as academia, public and private entities as well as NGOs. Moreover, consortiums interested to participate must comprise at least of two participants, one of which is an academic institution and one from industry.
The funding modalities of these projects are divided into eligible direct costs and eligible indirect costs. The former consist of technical and management personnel costs, purchase of specialised equipment, travel, networking and dissemination, and subcontracting (limited to 25 per cent of eligible cost). Eligible indirect costs include 10 per cent of eligible costs, excluding subcontracting and equipment over €5,000. The pre-registration cut-off date is January 13, 2012
