Plugging into the music scene

For the past 14 years, Teatru Unplugged has had three main objectives: to serve as a platform for upcoming local musicians; to expose patrons to different genres of music; and to create a great night out at the Manoel Theatre.

To cater for the increased interest and requests from local artists and bands, co-founders Jonathan Shaw and Nirvana Azzopardi have, as of this year, formed a selection committee which is assisting with the artistic element of this show. Besides the co-founders, the committee is composed of Renzo Spiteri, Alex Papagiorcopulo and Peter Grech.

Mr Shaw explained how each edition is marked by a quest for innovation; and the idea of having six or seven diverse acts of various musical genres has helped to create a fast-moving and interesting show.

In keeping with the previous two editions, this year’s show will be opened by 13-year-old Nicholas Montebello. The young talent initiative has been well received and expresses the committee’s commitment to promoting young talent while simultaneously providing a platform to launch young new artists. This year’s line-up includes classical and Spanish guitarist Mark Rapa, UK-based and ex-Flying Alligators frontman Ronnie Busuttil, Cruz lead Marilyn Mifsud, the energetic band Crosswalk and FellowFish, fronted by Keith Anthony.

Malta’s internationally-respected musician Renzo Spiteri is also featuring in this year’s event together with UK-based vocalist and songwriter Andrea Britton (who has shared the stage with Kylie, Amy Winehouse, George Michael, Duffy, Puff Daddy and Beyonce) and guitarist Dave Randall who has collaborated with Slovo, Faithless, Dido, Emiliana Torrini and Sinead O’Connor. They will be joined by Malta’s own Keith (Kiko) Muscat on bass.

• Go Teatru Unplugged 14 will be held at the Manoel Theatre on December 2, 3 and 4. Performances start at 8 p.m. Tickets may be obtained by phone on 2124 6389, by e-mail: bookings@teatrumanoel.com.mt or online: www.teatrumanoel.com.mt. Early booking is recommended.
