Transport Minister Austin Gatt was discharged from hospital yesterday afternoon after being admitted on Monday night suffering from “severe abdominal pain” caused by a stomach ulcer.

His medical condition was stable, Mater Dei Hospital said. He was suffering from dyspepsia – pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen – and it was found he had a peptic ulcer.

An ulcer is a sore that causes damage to the inner lining of the stomach or the upper part of the intestine. A bacterium is the main cause of ulcers in this area.

Dr Gatt has cancelled all his engagements this week except for his parliamentary commitments.
